🧸 Soft Berts, Big Hugs: Could Cuddly Robots Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles Be Next?

🧸 Soft Berts, Big Hugs: Could Cuddly Robots Made from Recycled Plastic Bottles Be Next?

Usually on Sundays we introduce you to one of our beloved Bert characters, handmade by Andy from old helicopter parts, vintage clocks, Cold War spy cameras, and bits of mystery scrap found in boxes labelled “might be useful one day.”

But today’s Meet the Berts is a little different.

Because these Berts aren’t made yet.
They’re not sitting on the shelf or waiting for a name.
They’re just an idea, floating around in my imagination with sparkles, scribbles and soft edges.

And it all started with a question:

What if Berts could be… cuddly?

♻️ Could We Create a Soft Bert from Another Throwaway Item… Plastic Bottles?

It started with a simple thought:
What if, instead of bolts and bike chains, we could make a Bert that’s… soft?
Something you can snuggle, squeeze, and carry under your arm to the supermarket like it’s totally normal?

Something that’s huggable.

And that thought didn’t come out of nowhere.

From the very start, Weebert’s World has been all about reusing, repurposing, and giving scrap a second life.
Every Bert we’ve ever made is built from things other people might throw away, Cold War spy cameras, old typewriters, clock parts, broken tools.

So we found ourselves wondering…

Could we create a soft Bert from another throwaway item… plastic bottles?
Could something destined for the bin become something to cuddle instead?

That’s where the magic of recycled plastic comes in.

🧵 Can You Really Make Soft Toys from Recycled Plastic Bottles?

Yes … and it’s actually brilliant.

You’ve probably seen clothes or tote bags labelled “made from recycled bottles.” That’s not just clever marketing, it’s real science.

Here’s how it works (in Lotty-speak):

  1. Used plastic bottles are collected and cleaned

  2. They’re chopped into tiny flakes (like crunchy snowflakes)

  3. Those flakes are melted into fibres

  4. The fibres are spun into soft yarn

  5. That yarn becomes fabric, gentle, durable, and perfect for a cuddly toy

It’s clever, planet-friendly, and surprisingly snuggly.

So when I started wondering what a cuddly version of Weebert might look like… well, I couldn’t stop.

🧠 Why Soft Toys Matter (Even for Grown-Ups)

Cuddly toys aren’t just cute. They’re comforting.

Psychologists have found that hugging a soft toy, even as an adult, can reduce stress, boost mood and even help with sleep. For children, soft toys can offer emotional reassurance, help navigate new environments, and become imaginative companions.

A soft Bert could be more than a toy.
It could be a bedtime friend, a travel buddy, or a source of calm in a noisy world.

And when that soft toy is made from recycled plastic?
That’s a hug with a heart, for people and the planet.

🧸 The Cuddly Bert Concepts

Now, just to be clear, these soft Berts aren’t in production. They’re just concepts at this stage: early sketches and doodles, floating between the corners of our notebooks and the shelves of our imaginations.

But oh… they’re adorable.

Imagine a plush Weebert with stitched goggles and a soft yellow “W” on his chest. A floppy Barbara the flying sheep with friendly eyes and flappy wings. A squeezable Digbert with a tiny plush trowel. A gentle Tweebert holding a flower made from embroidered clock parts.

They don’t exist yet …. but we can see them.
