A Chicken, a Cup of Tea, and a Rose Called Judy Dench!
I didn’t plan on writing a blog today.
Actually, I didn’t plan on doing anything today.
After the high of winning Theo Paphitis’ Small Business Sunday this week (still can’t quite believe that!), I thought I’d ride the wave a bit longer. Post a few celebratory photos. Maybe even have a day where I feel like I know what I’m doing.
But instead, I woke up feeling flat.
The sort of flat where the list is long, your head is noisy, and everything from YouTube algorithms to posting on LinkedIn feels like climbing a hill in wellies filled with water.
That’s the thing no one tells you about chasing your dream….
there’s no off switch.
Even when you’re winning, your brain is still sprinting ahead shouting, “What’s next? What have you forgotten? Keep going!”
So I made a cup of tea (milk after, obviously, I’m not a monster), sat down with my laptop in the gazebo to get my head straight…
…and then Ginge jumped on me.
Not metaphorically. Literally.
Ginge, our chicken who’s convinced she’s a Labrador, leapt onto my lap like she’d been summoned by stress itself. Right on top of the keyboard, right in the middle of my train of thought.
She pecked at the mousepad, let out a contented cluck, and settled in like she was about to edit a video herself.
And in that ridiculous, lovely moment, I laughed.
Because maybe she had the right idea.
Sit down. Stop panicking. Be where your feet, or claws, are.
So I shut the laptop. Put the tea down. And phoned my 91-year-old friend.
We went to David Austin Roses.
We didn’t talk about YouTube (she has no idea what it is!) or deadlines or pitch decks.
We wandered slowly. Smelled things. Pointed at apricot blooms and said things like “ooh that’s got a nice old-fashioned look” and “I’d have that one on my casket.” (She’s got a wicked sense of humour.)
We wandered past delicate whites, dusky pinks, and names like ancient poets and royalty … and then we saw her.
Dame Judi Dench.
Of course Dame Judi Dench has a rose.
And of course it was the most commanding bloom in the garden, apricot and billowing.
She looked like she could narrate your life and make it sound important.
And then, as we sat on a bench watching bees doing their thing, I asked her,
“What would you say to your 61-year-old self?”
She didn’t even hesitate.
“Enjoy every day. Enjoy your life.”
Not build the business or sort your finances or be more productive.
Just: enjoy your life.
It felt like someone opened a window in my head.
Because I do want Weebert’s World to be something special. I do want to be brilliant on YouTube, and finish that stop motion, and grow the stories, and figure out this mysterious magic called “audience engagement.”
But not at the cost of forgetting to live the life I’m telling children to imagine.
So today, I’m telling you (and reminding myself):
Take the break. Smell the roses. Let the chicken climb on your laptop.
Because the work will still be there tomorrow.
But today, this soft, gentle, slightly chaotic day, is never coming back.
