How The Berts Got Their Name

If you’ve ever met one of our scrap-built robot sculptures—The Berts – Weebert, Digbert, Bertyclean, or any of their quirky cousins—you might have wondered: why are they all called Berts?

Well, it all starts with my great-grandad, Herbert. Grandad Bert to me.

He was the original recycler. Not in the trendy, eco-conscious sense we talk about today—but in the old-school, keep-that-just-in-case kind of way. His shed was a carefully curated chaos of biscuit tins full of rusty screws, bent nails, bits of wood, broken tools, and wire. He saw potential in everything. Nothing was truly rubbish—it just hadn’t found its new purpose yet.

Fast forward a few decades, and Andy’s workshop feels a lot like Grandad Bert’s shed—except with the occasional helicopter part thrown in. When Andy began building sculptures out of scrap—vintage clocks, old electronics, discarded tools—it only felt right to name them after the man who never threw anything away.

And so, The Berts were born.

These sculptures aren’t toys. They aren’t built for children (although children do love them). They’re made for grown-ups who appreciate craftsmanship, storytelling, and the magic of turning scrap into something extraordinary. They’re designed to be talking points. Conversation starters. Pieces that make people smile, raise eyebrows, and say, “What’s that made from?”

Each Bert is a fusion of past and present—old parts given new life. There’s something quietly powerful about holding a piece of something that once served one purpose, and seeing it transformed into a character full of personality.

These sculptures are the heart of Weebert’s World—our storytelling universe where the Berts become characters in tales that encourage children to play, explore, imagine, and create. But it started with the sculptures. With the scrap. With the spirit of Grandad Bert.

We’re not out to single-handedly save the planet. We’re not perfect. But we are doing our bit. Creating something meaningful from materials that others overlook. And maybe, just maybe, inspiring others to think differently about what we throw away—and what we keep.

The Berts are more than sculptures. They’re reminders that creativity can come from anywhere. That beauty can be built from what’s broken. And that a little imagination (and a lot of copper wire) goes a long way.

So if you ever meet a Bert, now you know—there’s history in those hinges, purpose in those pliers and a story behind every spring.

Lotty x
