The Berts Story
Once upon a time, in a quiet part of Shropshire, England, there was an ordinary house on an ordinary street in an ordinary village where Andy and his wife Lotty lived. Their house looked just like the others around it, with pretty flowers in the garden and an ordinary workshop in the garden where Andy tinkered with all sorts of things.
But inside that workshop, something magical was happening. Andy didn’t just fix broken things—he made robots! These weren’t like the robots you usually see on the television with shiny new metal parts. Andy’s robots were special because they were made from old bits and bobs that people had thrown away. One of these robots is Weebert, who has a funny tangle of copper wire for hair and a mischievous spark in his eyes.
Weebert lives with a whole family of robots called The Berts. There is Albert, who can travel through time with his spinning gears and flashing lights. Wheelybert who zooms around on wheels instead of legs, and Egbert who hovers around to take care of the chickens and other animals in the garden.
Digbert, who loves gardening, always worries about his flowers and vegetables, while Justbert, the oldest robot, is wise and likes to help everyone. Gerbert is a master at fixing things, and Hubert has a funny 3 speed umbrella on his head that he can open in different speeds.
And let’s not forget the Bakerbert twins, BB and BoBo, who love baking yummy treats in Andy and Lotty’s kitchen, filling the house with delicious smells.
Although they live in an ordinary house, in an ordinary street in an ordinary village every day isn’t ordinary for The Berts. Every day is an adventure……

The First Bert
The maker told us we came from a place called imagination. We don’t know where imagination is, but all Berts come from there.
The workshop is a jumble of stuff, but the maker knows where everything is. First of all, there was just me, JustBert, but soon there were many more of us. So many of us that Lotty said the house would burst at the seams. We looked and looked, but we never did see it burst.
It was the maker who brought us from the place called imagination. He used the stuff to make us: the metal stuff, the wooden stuff, the bits from old worn-out clocks, and even the broken stuff from friends and neighbours. Every Bert is made of the stuff, but we are all different. Once we were made, it was Lotty who brought us to life.
I was standing on a table next to the maker’s chair. I had been standing there for what seemed like forever. I had watched the maker do lots of drawings and scribblings while he and Lotty drank cups of tea. On the special day, I was standing on the table as usual and watched as Lotty read a book. I could see her head nodding through my two eyes, and then I heard her snoring. She was asleep.
At that very moment, I realised I could move! My one leg bent, and I pushed off the table and hopped onto the chair. A second strong push from my leg, and I was standing next to Lotty. I tapped her left arm.
She snored.
I jumped onto her right knee and jumped up and down.
She snored.
I hopped even higher until my wiry hair prickled her nose.
She snored.
I pushed the book from her knee, and she yawned and opened her eyes. She lifted her glasses and looked at me. She didn’t seem surprised to see me at all.
“Oh, you’re awake then,” she said. “It’s about time. Come on, then, there are adventures to be had.”
Come with me and meet the Berts. Follow us on our adventures and see if you can find the place called imagination too.
