Meet Aibert: Helping Children Understand AI

Meet Aibert: Helping Children Understand AI (Without Losing Their Imagination)

Hello lovely people,

I want to introduce you to someone new in Weebert’s World.

This is Aibert.

He’s a little different from the other Berts. Not louder. Not shinier. Not faster. Just… thoughtful in a very particular way. The sort of Bert who listens carefully, pauses before answering, and sometimes says things that make you tilt your head and go, “Hmm… that’s interesting.”

Because AIbert represents something many of us are trying to understand right now.

Artificial Intelligence.

Now before that phrase makes you feel like you need a degree in computer science and a strong cup of tea, let’s gently unwrap it together. Because if we’re feeling unsure as grown ups, imagine how it feels for children.

So… what is AI?

When I explain it to children, I don’t start with technology.

I start with something familiar.

I say:

“AI is a bit like a very clever helper that has read lots and lots of information and can use that to answer questions, spot patterns, or help solve problems.”

It doesn’t think like we do.
It doesn’t feel like we do.
It doesn’t know things in the way humans do.

It learns from patterns in information.

AIbert, in our world, is made from old parts just like the others. But instead of fixing engines or baking cakes, his special skill is noticing patterns and helping the other Berts figure things out.

If Weebert is curious… AIbert is curious in a different way. He asks, “What usually happens next?”

Why children need to understand AI

Children are growing up in a world where AI will quietly sit behind so many things.

Search results.
Games.
Videos.
Apps.
Even toys one day.

We don’t need to teach them how to use AI tools at a young age.

But we do need to help them understand:

  • It is created by humans
  • It is not always right
  • It does not have feelings
  • It should never replace their own thinking

Because here’s the important bit, Lotty to you, parent to parent:

AI should support imagination, not replace it.

And that’s where Weebert’s World comes in.

How to explain AI to a child (simply and safely)

Here are a few ways you can talk about AI at home in a way that feels natural and not overwhelming.

1. Use real-life comparisons

Try this:

“AI is like a robot that has read lots of books and can help answer questions, but it doesn’t always get things right.”

Children understand helpers. They understand trying. That’s enough.

2. Encourage questioning

One of the best habits we can give children is this:

“Let’s check if that’s right.”

If AI gives an answer, treat it like you would anything else.

  • Look it up together
  • Ask another source
  • Talk it through

You’re not just teaching them about AI.

You’re teaching them how to think.

3. Keep humans at the centre

Remind children:

  • People make AI
  • People decide how it’s used
  • People are responsible for what happens

AI is a tool. Not a leader.

4. Set simple safety boundaries

For younger children especially:

  • Don’t share personal information
  • Always use AI with a grown up
  • If something feels confusing or odd, talk about it

Think of it like teaching them to cross the road.

We don’t stop them walking. We teach them how to do it safely.

Where Aibert fits into Weebert’s World

Aibert isn’t here to take over.

He’s not the cleverest Bert.

He’s not the leader.

He’s part of the family.

Sometimes he helps solve a puzzle.
Sometimes he gets things slightly wrong.
Sometimes he reminds the others to pause and think.

And sometimes, Weebert still comes up with the best idea… simply because he imagined something new.

That balance matters.

Because the heart of Weebert’s World will always be this:

Imagination first. Always.

A gentle thought for us as grown ups

It’s easy to feel like the world is moving faster than we can keep up.

New words. New tools. New worries.

But children don’t need us to have all the answers.

They need us to stay curious with them.

To say:

“I don’t know… shall we figure it out together?”

That’s where the magic lives.

Not in the technology.

But in the conversation around it.

Bringing it back to our world

Aibert is our way of opening that door gently.

Not with fear.
Not with pressure.
But with curiosity, warmth, and a little bit of wonder.

Just like everything else in Weebert’s World.

Because whether it’s a scrap-built robot, a flying sheep, or a new idea like AI…

It all comes back to the same thing.

Giving children permission to:

Play. Explore. Imagine. Create.

And now…

Understand the world they’re growing up in, just a little bit better.
