Meet the Berts: Albert the Time Travelling Bert ⏳🚁
This Sunday on Meet the Berts, it’s time (literally) to introduce a character who’s always dashing off into another dimension, dragging a few bewildered Berts behind him, it’s Albert the Time Travelling Bert! 🕰️
Now I know what you’re thinking… Time travel? Really, Lotty? But let me tell you when you’ve got a husband who builds robot sculptures from Cold War cameras, helicopter gears, and vintage tools, you start to believe that absolutely anything is possible.
Albert is no ordinary Bert. He’s a bit of a whirlwind (a polite whirlwind, of course he’s very punctual). Built by Andy with exquisite detail, Albert’s body is a vintage Brunton compass, so he always knows which direction he’s going even when his fellow Berts don’t. His base is made from a brass helicopter wiper motor gearbox gear (say that five times fast), which gives him his signature slow-and-steady spin when he’s on the move.
Albert’s head? A beautifully aged pair of vintage opera glasses. I like to imagine the worlds they’ve seen… Victorian theatres, wartime rooftops, or perhaps just a row of Berts arguing over whose turn it is to do the washing up.
His arms are made from solder station helping hands appropriate, really, because he’s always lending a hand (or a compass) to help someone find their way. One hand holds a vintage pocket watch, the other a 30-second steel hourglass egg timer. Because, even when you’re hopping through time, breakfast must be properly timed.
Albert features in both of my published Weebert’s World books “Weebert Has an Adventure” and “Robots, Chickens & Dinosaurs.” Why? Because he’s the spark that turns an ordinary day into a full-blown adventure. One moment you’re having a quiet cuppa, and the next, you’re being whisked off to Bertstone racetrack or dodging pterodactyls in prehistoric skies. Standard Tuesday stuff, really.
What I love most about Albert is what he represents. He reminds us that curiosity is a superpower. He’s not afraid to ask “what if?” and that’s where the fun begins. As adults, we sometimes forget how powerful those two little words can be. But children? They live in the world of “what if?” and that’s exactly the world Weebert’s World is built in.
Albert is a symbol of creative learning. His story encourages children (and grown-ups!) to explore history, time, science and geography in a way that’s engaging, interactive, and fun. He opens doors to big conversations: What is time? How do we know what happened before we were born? Can we imagine the future? Could we build it?
These are questions worth asking, not just in classrooms, but around the kitchen table, in the garden, and during bedtime stories. It’s about giving children permission to explore, to imagine, to wonder. And to believe that their ideas, their inventions, their stories matter.
That’s what Weebert’s World is all about.
And in case you’re wondering, yes, the Berts are made from actual scrap. Andy’s workshop (sorry, “creative cave”) is filled with bits of helicopters, clocks, old tools, brass gears, and dusty electrical parts that many would throw away. But in our world, they become characters, stories, inspiration.
So if you’ve got a curious child or a curious heart yourself Albert is here to remind you that there’s always time for imagination. And you never know where it might take you.

And if you’ve got a bit of vintage brass lying around and a few opera glasses to spare… who knows? You might just build the next Bert.
