Meet the Berts – Say Hello to the simply gorgeous Egbert!
It’s Sunday, which means it’s Meet the Berts time again—and this week’s star is Egbert, or as we call him at home, “The Chicken Boy.” And yes, that’s said with love, not irony.
Now I know I’m biased, but Egbert is a hoot. Andy might be the one who built him out of a pile of perfectly good scrap (okay, it looked like junk at the time), but I’m the one who gave him his gorgeous, flamboyant, feather-loving, chicken-serenading personality.
Let’s start with his look. Egbert’s body is made from a pewter antique inkwell—very classy. His eyes are vintage opera glasses, so he sees the world with dramatic flair (and maybe a bit of side-eye if you forget to feed the chickens). His arms? An old grabbit tool. His hands? Lathe cutting tools—strong, stylish, and great for scooping seed. His base is a brass cog from a helicopter wiper motor gearbox (try saying that before your first coffee), and his head is topped off with a helicopter hydraulic filter and wild copper hair. Because of course it is.
But it’s what’s inside that counts—and in Egbert’s case, it’s a secret cupboard in his tummy. On regular days, he keeps it stocked with peeled sunflower seeds for the chickens (because apparently they’re “too lazy to peel them”). But come Easter? That cupboard transforms into a mini egg hideaway for our grandchildren. Honestly, he’s more popular than the Easter Bunny in our house.
Egbert is flamboyant. He’s friendly. His favourite colour is pink….And he loves a chicken fact. Ask him anything about hens and he’ll chirp back, “Did you know chickens are closely related to dinosaurs?” He’s been saying that all week. I think he’s trying to scare the other Berts.
He also sings to the chickens. No, I’m not making this up. If you ever walk past our coop and hear a falsetto version of “Don’t Stop Believin’,” that’s Egbert. He insists it helps them lay better.
There’s something about him that makes people smile—kids especially. Maybe it’s the mix of silliness, heart, and that opera-glasses gaze. Maybe it’s because he reminds us that you can turn a box of broken parts into something full of life and love.
So here’s to Egbert—chicken whisperer, chocolate smuggler, proud member of the Bert family.
