Spotlight on me!

Spotlight on me! – There was a time—not all that long ago—when I could have walked down the high street dressed as a traffic cone and still gone unnoticed. Some people are born to stand in the spotlight. Me? I was usually behind the curtain holding the torch… and probably a clipboard.

As a military wife, I was proudly invisible—the steady presence in the background while my husband served. I wore the role like a badge of honour: logistics manager, emotional anchor, CEO of domestic operations. I was never the headline act, but I always clapped loudly from the wings.

Then came motherhood, where invisibility becomes a survival skill. You learn to blend into the background of school halls, birthday parties, and late-night laundry marathons. You become the blur just beyond the balloon arch.

In my public sector life, I mastered the art of unseen effort—supporting county councillors and senior directors, making sure they looked polished and prepared. I was the swan feet under the surface, paddling like mad so someone else could glide effortlessly across the pond. Again I felt it was a role I was made for.

Layer on being over 50, carrying a few extra pounds, and a lifetime of playing support crew—and it’s no wonder the invisibility cloak felt permanently stitched to my shoulders.

But here’s the twist: I’ve taken it off.

Picture this: me in a posh frock, the invisibility cloak dramatically flung on the ground, and Weebert standing triumphantly on top of it like a tiny robot reclaiming my narrative. It’s a new chapter—and this time, I’m not just in the footnotes.

I’m building Weebert’s World—a slightly scrappy, deeply joyful universe of robots made from broken parts, stories filled with heart, and imagination that refuses to be boxed in. I’m writing. Creating. Sharing. And learning that my voice matters too.

Weebert might be made of scrap, but he’s packed with purpose. Just like me. And maybe just like you.

If you’ve ever felt invisible—I see you. And if you’re only just finding the courage to step into the light, slippers and all—I’m cheering for you from the front row.
