Taking Shape: The Mystery Bert Finds Its Feet
Two days ago, this was just a scattered pile of parts.
Today, it’s starting to look like… something. I’m not giving too much away, but let’s just say the workbench has been a busy place.
This stage of the build is where the real magic happens. Pieces that looked unrelated on Monday are now connecting. Shapes are forming. The character is beginning to stand, both literally and in personality.
I watched Andy leaning over the bench this morning, brow furrowed in concentration, adjusting a joint until it sat just right. A quiet hum was playing from the old workshop radio, mingling with the gentle clink of tools and the occasional muttered “that’ll do” when a part finally found its place.
Some sections came together easily. Others… not so much. Yesterday, one entire section was taken apart, rethought, and rebuilt. That’s the way it goes with the Berts, there’s no rushing it. If it doesn’t feel right, it comes off and goes back on differently.
One moment really stood out today, the addition of a new section that gave the whole build a sudden sense of balance. I can’t say which part, but when Andy attached it, the whole thing seemed to own the space on the bench, as if it knew it was becoming something important.
And then there’s the top of the head. At this stage, it’s still missing something, a feature that’s been causing more head-scratching than most. I’ve seen sketches, I’ve seen trials, and I’ve seen at least one version that Andy completely scrapped because it “didn’t feel right.” Whatever ends up there will need to be bold enough to match the rest of the character.
The guesses you’ve been sending in since Monday have been brilliant, from the wildly imaginative to the “oh, you might be onto something” kind. I won’t say which is which, but some have made us laugh out loud. Keep them coming.
This new Bert is more than just a sculpture. I can already imagine it stepping into Weebert’s World, perhaps with a special skill or a surprising feature that makes it stand out.
Friday, you’ll meet them properly. And trust me… you’ll hear them too.
with love
