There was a time—long before Weebert’s World—when I was giving a presentation to a group of very senior directors. I’d prepped, I’d rehearsed. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself.
What I had not realised, however, was that earlier that morning, I’d been in the chicken coop retrieving eggs—with my trusty spaghetti serving spoon. (Yes, really. Because my chickens have decided the nesting boxes are simply not good enough.)
Fast forward to the networking bit after the presentation—where you awkwardly stand with a coffee and try to make conversation with someone who knows someone’s boss. One of the directors came over to speak with me. He was polite, friendly… and then he reached up, plucked a bit of something from my hair, and said,
“I think you have a wood shaving stuck just here.”
CHICKEN BEDDING.
In. My. Hair.
I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me whole. But it didn’t. So instead, I laughed, thanked him, and muttered something about being a woman of many talents. And you know what? We ended up having a great chat—about chickens, actually. Not the business strategy I’d just spent weeks working on. But still.
The thing is, we try so hard to look polished, to come across as if we’ve got it all together. But life is messy. Especially when you’re juggling a million things, from family to work to chickens (literal and metaphorical).
Now, years later, I’m building Weebert’s World—a creative, slightly chaotic little universe filled with stories, robots, imagination, and heart. And I bring all of myself into it: the dreamer, the grafter, the grandma, the woman who once presented to directors with chicken bedding in her hair.
So today’s post is a reminder: you don’t have to be perfect to show up. You just have to show up as yourself. Chicken shavings, spaghetti spoon and all.
Lotty x
