We’ve Moved House 12 Times… What It Taught Me About Children, Change, and Feeling at Home

There’s a box in the corner of the room as I write this.

It’s half full.

Inside it are things that don’t quite belong anywhere right now… a photo frame, a candle, a few bits waiting to find their place again.

Around it, the house feels a little different.

Not empty. Not yet.
Just… in-between.

This isn’t our first time.

One of the things you got used to with 27 years in the army was the moving house! Andy and I have moved house twelve times.

Twelve different front doors.
Twelve different beginnings.
Twelve chances to understand what really matters when creating a home for children.

You would think it would feel easier by now.

It doesn’t.

This Easter, that feeling is here again.

Chocolate eggs on the side.
Granddaughters in the garden, gently holding chickens.
Laughter drifting through the open door.

And in the middle of it all…

Boxes.

When I was younger, I thought moving house was about getting everything organised.

But what I’ve learnt over time is this:

Children don’t experience a house the way we do.

They don’t notice the layout or the décor.

They notice what feels familiar.

A favourite toy on the bed.
A familiar routine at bedtime.
A voice that sounds the same, even in a new place.

These are the things that help children feel safe.

And feeling safe is what allows children to play, explore, imagine and create.

I used to unpack their things first.

Always.

Before the kitchen.
Before anything else made sense.

Because those small, familiar details weren’t just comforting.

They were anchors.

We’re moving back to Yorkshire now.

Closer to family.

And even now, after twelve moves, that quiet question still appears:

“Are we doing the right thing?”

But here’s what I know now, something that matters not just for moving house, but for raising children in today’s world:

👉 It’s not the house that creates stability
👉 It’s the feeling inside it

Children don’t need perfect homes.

They need consistency.
They need reassurance.
They need to feel safe enough to imagine.

And in a world that is constantly changing, that feeling has never been more important.

That’s exactly what we are building with Weebert’s World.

A British children’s storytelling brand rooted in real, scrap-built robots and gentle, imaginative stories.

On the surface, it’s about robots and adventures.

But underneath, it’s about something deeper.

Weebert’s World is a place children trust.

A world they can return to again and again.

A space that gives children permission to play, explore, imagine and create, whether at home, in the classroom, or through storytelling.

Because imagination isn’t just creativity.

It’s confidence.
It’s exploration.
It’s how children begin to understand the world around them.

So if you are a parent, grandparent, or teacher navigating change, whether that’s moving house, starting a new school, or simply trying to create a sense of calm in a busy world…

Please know this:

It doesn’t have to be perfect.

The house doesn’t need to be finished.

The routine doesn’t need to be flawless.

What matters most is how children feel.

Do they feel safe?
Do they feel seen?
Do they feel free to imagine?

Because long after the boxes are unpacked…

That feeling is what stays.

And if you can give them that…

You’ve already created something extraordinary.
