What a Handful of Scrap Can Teach Us About Imagination
Last week, Andy and I spent the afternoon in Coleham Primary School’s little library for their Robots & Music after-school club, and it reminded us, once again, why we’re doing all this.
The library was buzzing the moment we walked in. The tables were covered with glue sticks, cardboard, and bottle tops, the beautiful kind of organised chaos that only children can create. Every child had built their own whistling Bert, each one wonderfully different.
When it was time to begin, they gathered round and started asking questions,
“What are the Berts made of?”
“What can they do?”
Our answer was simple:
“Whatever your imagination decides.”
And that’s when the magic happened.
We shared The Adventures of Weebert the Robot, Robots, Chickens and Dinosaurs, and the room filled with laughter, songs, and sound effects. Little voices became robot beeps, chicken clucks, and dinosaur roars. They weren’t just listening to the story; they were inside it.
Then one little boy, his eyes shining, said quietly:
“I’m going home to make my own Bert… and maybe even write a story about it.”
That single sentence stopped me in my tracks.
Because that’s exactly what Weebert’s World was born from, the idea that creativity starts small. A spark. A bit of curiosity. A handful of scrap.
When Andy first began making the Berts, he wasn’t thinking about TV series or outreach programmes. He was using creativity to rebuild his own sense of purpose. Each scrap-built robot was made from something discarded, bits of old helicopters, broken tools, vintage cameras, and somehow, through care and imagination, became something full of life.
Now, seeing children connect with those same creations, and hearing them talk about making and storytelling, feels like it’s come full circle.
What struck me most at Coleham was how inter-generational it felt. Parents and grandparents came along too, smiling as the children proudly showed their whistling Berts. You could see recognition in their eyes, that same love of tinkering, building, and reusing that once filled sheds and garages across the country.
That’s what Weebert’s World stands for. It’s not just about robots or STEM. It’s about reclaiming creativity as something that belongs to all of us.
It’s about family. About turning imagination into connection. About showing children that engineering and art can live side by side, that curiosity and care can build something wonderful.
When a child says, “I can make my own,” they’re not just talking about a robot. They’re discovering confidence. They’re learning that innovation begins with play.
And that’s why we keep doing this.
Because somewhere between the glue sticks, the songs, and the stories, creativity becomes contagious. And in those moments, when a little boy dreams of making his own Bert, the future of imagination feels very bright indeed. 💛
