There’s a gap no one really warns you about when you decide to chase a dream. It’s the one between the beautiful, shiny vision in your head… and the slightly chaotic, biscuit-crumb-covered reality on your desk.
For me, that dream is Weebert’s World. I can see it so clearly—our scrap art robots on children’s TV, inspiring little ones to use their imaginations and create their own stories. I believe in it with every fibre of my being.
But then there’s reality: the paperwork, the funding forms, the business plan edits (again), the days when the ideas flow and the days when the only thing flowing is the washing machine. And don’t get me started on trying to sound like I know what I’m doing on a Teams call while trying to stop the chickens knocking at the kitchen door!
And yesterday, a telephone call made me realise again—you don’t know what you don’t know. It’s humbling and a little bit scary, but also a reminder that learning is part of the journey. No one has all the answers, especially when you’re building something new.
And yet… this gap is where the magic actually happens. It’s where dreams get tested, stretched, sometimes crumpled, and then reshaped stronger than before. It’s also where you learn what you’re really made of (turns out I’m 30% imagination, 40% stubbornness, 20% coffee, and 10% sunflower seeds—mainly for the chickens).
So if you’re standing in your own gap today, between what you see in your heart and what’s currently scribbled on a Post-it stuck to your fridge—know this: it’s okay. More than okay. You’re building something. Every little step counts.
Let’s keep going, one wobbly, hopeful, biscuit-crumb-covered step at a time.
